Below is an article I found dated 03/10/92, the same day as the tournament. The article online says 2005, but it also says if you look closely, that it was pulled from the 1992 archives and posted on the internet for the first time in 2005. If you read the article, it is obvious that the article is from 1992 due to clues such as Ian Baker Finch being stated as the "defending British Open champion", which he won in 1991, so there is an example. Not that it's needed because it states the article is originally from '92. Anyway, I have pasted the article below so that people can have some knowledge of what went on that day and verification of who was there.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you for viewing!
At the Eckerd Golf Classic at Bardmoor North next Monday, 15 area professionals will have an opportunity to match skills with 15 PGA Tour pros.
They will play with local sponsors in a two-best-ball format. Each amateur golfer will play nine holes with a touring pro and nine holes with a local professional.
The Tour pros include Ian Baker-Finch, the defending British Open champion; Andrew Magee, winner of the 1991 Nestle and Las Vegas Invitational tournaments; Brad Faxon, Buick Open winner; D.A. Weibring, Hardee's Classic champion, and Bill Glasson of Oldsmar, who plays out of East Lake Woodlands.
The area pros include Jay Overton of Innisbrook and Brett Upper of Feather Sound, veterans of the PGA Tour; Rick Dingus of Wentworth, Eric Adams of Lakewood and Jeff Hollis of Mangrove Bay.
"I'm really looking forward to the tournament," said Hollis, 34, director of golf for St. Petersburg's two municipal courses, Mangrove Bay and Twin Brooks. "It gives us (local pros) an opportunity to match skills with some of the Tour pros. Secondly, it's a nice way to raise money for those charity programs."
Tournament proceeds will benefit Eckerd Family Youth Alternatives, Inc., which operates 19 facilities in seven states and serves more than 2,000 youths and their families. The organization operates four programs: Eckerd Wilderness Educational System, Eckerd Youth Development Center, Challenge Programs and Florida Conservation Corps.
Hollis, a graduate of Largo High and St. Petersburg Junior College, shot a 2-over-par 74 two weeks ago at the Channel Markers Pro-Am at Clearwater Country Club. "I was sticking the ball good but my putting was off," he said. "But that can be expected due to lack of practice. During the busy winter season, I only get out to play once every two or three weeks."
Hollis has a best round of 65, which he shot at Seminole Country Club, where he served as the golf pro for three years before accepting the management position with the city of St. Petersburg. At Grasslands in Lakeland last December, Hollis teamed with former Western Kentucky teammate Kenny Perry in a Tour pro-club pro tournament and shot 66 in a better-ball format for 10th place in a 45-team field.
"The sign of a good golf course is the need to use every club in your bag," Hollis said, "and that's what I like about Bardmoor North. You can't just get by with a driver and a wedge."
Tournament day will begin at 9 a.m. with an exhibition by Weibring. The public is invited. The tournament itself begins at 10 with a shotgun start.
"The players are going to try to be as accessible as possible," said tournament official Andy Anderson. "People will have a great chance to see some awfully good golf up close."
Tickets are at the gate (Starkey Road, Largo) or through Triple A offices. However, Eckerd Drug outlets are offering a special coupon. Parking is free.
Club championship: At Lakewood on Saturday, Johnny Williams, the defending club champion, was eliminated by Allen Bender. Also advancing to the semifinals next Saturday were Lonnie Watson, who beat Vince Chapman; Mike Bishop, a winner over Kent Whittemore, and Ryan Seibert, who eliminated Jim Thompson, the 1990 club champion. The final will be a 36-hole match on Sunday.
Holes-in-one: Michael Petrino, 73, aced the 135-yard 11th at Mangrove Bay with a 7-iron. He's a winter resident from Spring Lake, N.J. On Feb. 28 at Largo Municipal, two members of a foursome scored with one swing. Fred Doran of Seminole had an ace on the 130-yard No. 5 hole. Then partner Bill Kemp, also from Seminole, aced the next hole, 140 yards long, with a 9-iron. The following week, a third member of the group, Larry Guldan of Illinois, aced the sixth hole using a 7-iron.
Coming up: At Pasadena Country Club on Monday, the Seniors Golf Association (SGA) will hold a tournament offering prizes in low gross and low net divisions. It's a mixed-scramble format in which at least two tee shots from each player must be used. The tournament is open to all golfers 45 and over. For further information, call the SGA in Seminole at 393-7658.
PGA Tour: Dunedin High graduate John Huston won ,904 Sunday by finishing with a 279 in the Doral Open. Huston, who lives in Palm Harbor, shot progessively better rounds of 72, 70, 69 and 68 during the four-day tournament in Miami. Last year he won 5,853 to place 40th on the money list. Huston plays out of Innisbrook Golf Resort.
