If you’re used to traditional latex and acrylic based paints, you’ll notice clay based paint is quite thick. Don’t worry! There is nothing wrong with your can of paint, this is normal. In fact, customers love the thick nature of the paint because it’s easier to distress and results in better coverage. Make sure to give the can a good shake and use a stir stick to mix it up prior to using. If the clay based paint is still too thick for your liking, add a little water to your paint until you reach the consistency you’re happy with.
I suggest putting some of the paint in another container and adding a little water at a time. Then stir well until you find your desired consistency.
The clay and chalk components can also produce little clumps in the paint. This is the mineral nature of the paint. Stir it well to mix in the little clumps.
It is also a good idea to add a finishing product (paste wax) the paint after dried. This really adds to the vintage look.
