Looking to run OctoPi but can’t find a Raspberry Pi without an exorbitant markup? Don't feel like flashing your own Pi image and building an OctoPi from scratch? Here’s an elegant, turn-key, solution for running OctoPrint.
For less than the
list
price of an OctoPi setup (Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB, power supply, SD card and case), I’ll deliver you a complete OctoPrint solution based on a re-imaged HP Chromebox. The Chromebox’s Celeron 2955U has comparable
performance to a Pi 4, and runs OctoPrint beautifully.
I’ve been using this setup to run an Ender 3Pro for the last two years with great results.
Hardware:
HP Chromebox TPN-Q150
CELERON 2955U, 1.40GHZ
4GB RAM
16 GB SSD
Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n); Dual-Band (2.4 & 5 GHz)
Integrated Realtek RT8112G GbE
Power supply!
USB Flash Drive to configure wireless upon first boot
USB Cable to connect to your 3D printer
Software:
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with unattended upgrades enabled
OctoPrint 1.8.1
Cura 4.3
The system will come up on your
wired
LAN as octoprint.local running OctoPrint on port 5000.
There are three options to configure wireless:
Attach keyboard, mouse and monitor and configure using the desktop or via simple setup script
Temporarily attach to wired network, login via SSH and run simple setup script
Edit a config file on the provided USB Flash drive and insert prior to powering on. The system will detect the USB drive at boot and apply the configured settings
A link to detailed, step-by-step instructions is provided.
OctoPrint is most commonly run on a headless (no monitor or keyboard) system attached to your printer via a USB cable and accessed remotely from a desktop or laptop. The OctoBox operates perfectly in this manner out of the box.
A Graphical Desktop environment is installed.
It
will
run the installed Cura slicer and web browser to access OctoPrint running locally on the box for a dedicated all-in-one solution. Using it in this manner is somewhat sluggish with a nine year old Celeron with 4GB of RAM.
USB Cable photos are for illustrative purposes only.
If the cable option for your printer shows as sold out, just select any available option and message me after purchase. I'll substitute the cable you need.
